stylexsnap: Nicholas, senior multimedia monitoring analyst at PCO

Welcome readers to stylexsnap, a new regular column on CAPITAL HILL STYLE. If you are stylin' in the Parliamentary Precinct, we'll stop you in your tracks, capture it and chat about the individual fashion elements that collectively make you stand out in the capital scene. Here is our first subject.

Meet Nicholas. He’s all things digital at PCO. That’s Privy Council Office.

What caught the attention of CAPITAL HILL STYLE is his bold ensemble of accessories and extras, definitely unique to what we expect to see in the Precinct. We appreciate how Nicholas wears lighter colours and fabrics while pulling off a modern polished look.

Let’s focus in a little closer. Because, with Nicholas, it is all in the detail.

First – the knot.
His tie sits tight in an Eldredge knot
“I love the Eldredge knot. It adds a little flair to a very traditional style,” says Nicholas. “Plus you get to pick the length of the tie right off the bat, unlike the Windsor.”

Next, check out that pocket square.
As he tells us, he prefers keeping the silk accessory messy, not folded.

This hand-made, reversible pocket square is straight from local Ottawa designer, The Wardrobe Stylist. Available at her etsy.com store, Pairing Paisleys, for $25.

Then, we have the glasses. The classic Ray-Ban Clubmaster. Yes indeed, those frames are made of real wood.

And, we can’t let him go without his comment on his prized man-bun. “Own the man bun,” he says. “Shrug off the haters. I’m proud of it.”

And, Nicholas is off. Back to work on Sparks Street.

Talent and politics unite for the U.S.-Nordic Leaders Summit

Olivier Douliery/The Cut
As The Cut and Reuters reports, the Obamas hosted a very small 300-or so affair in honour of the U.S.-Nordic Leaders Summit.

The exclusive event had guests from every creative outlet. From fashion designers like Rick Owens and his partner Michele Lamy, to artists like Janelle Monae, the event brought some stunning looks that we believe now future State Dinner guests will have to up their style game even more so.

Other guests included Scandal's Bellamy Young, Jidenna Mobisson, Master of None's Aziz Ansari (with his adorable mom who is also on the show, as his date!), The Mindy Project's Ed Weeks, and Tracee Ellis Ross.

On Friday, creatives mingled with White House officials, diplomats, CEOs, and donors on the South Lawn. The atmosphere had a special touch of hand-rolled beeswax candles lit up which as Reuters reports, "reflected off ten-foot pillars of ice, an homage to the northern lights."

Pop singer Demi Lovato performed after the Nordic-inspired meal. The dinner included ahi tuna, tomato tartare, and classic red wine-braised beef short ribs.

Screen Style: USA's legal drama Suits has more Canadian connections than you think

Wikipedia

USA's legal drama Suits just began filming its sixth season in this week.

Meghan Markle/Facebook

With the help of the show's wardrobe stylist Jolie Andreatta, the on-screen style is divine (especially Harvey Specter's (Gabriel Macht) endless Tom Ford attire) and we often find ourselves coveting nearly every outfit we see on the screen.

Mashable

As simple and classic as a cardigan and pencil shirt may be, Andreatta has that special touch of making it all seem effortless. According to The Tig, a few of the labels she uses includes Burberry, Dolce & Gabbana, Jil Sander, and, of course, many Christian Louboutin pumps.

Fashion aside, the popular show is American but has a few quirky Canadian fashionable connections as well.

FILMING
Although the show is supposed to be based in New York City, the majority of the filming is done in Toronto, Canada (deemed one of the most stylish cities in the country). The show features the well-known Bay Adelaide Centre, and often enough viewers can see the TCC street cars in the background.

BFF's
Meghan Markle who plays Rachel Zane on the show is good friends with fashion strategist Jessica Mulroney (who is married to e-talk's Ben Mulroney, son of the former Prime Minister, Brian Mulroney), who styles Sophie Gregoire Trudeau, the wife of our current Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau.

COLLABS
Sarah Rafferty who plays Donna Paulsen on the show recently collaborated with Vancouver designer MEZZI, for their Cosima bag. The bag features smart technology and can charge your smartphone and iPad. MEZZI fits the show's vibe to a tee with it's modern clean lined aesthetic.

While you're anxiously waiting for the next season to air, Netflix offers seasons one through four, and five is currently available on iTunes.

According to the Toronto Star, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau lands in Washington D.C., on Wednesday, March 9 in prep for his first ever State Dinner as Prime Minister (along with his wife Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau) held at the White House with President Barack Obama and the First Lady.

Yahoo News
The State dinner will be held in the East Room with many members of cabinet members from the U.S. and Canada, with perhaps a few celebrities as well.

The Toronto Star also reports, before the dinner "each leader will offer a toast to his counterpart and praise relations between the two countries." Afterwards, there is entertainment and even dancing.
Sophie Gregoire-Trudeau was spotted in Canadian label Greta Constantine last week in Toronto for a gala, so we feel she may wear another Canadian designer for this week's dinner as well.

So what if you find yourself with an invite to the White House State Dinner? Don't worry, we have you covered.

WHAT TO WEAR
Stick to Formal wear. Think of it like the Oscars of American politics. The White House Correspondents Dinner or the Parliamentary Press Gallery Dinner is equivalent to the Golden Globes.

THE VIBE
It's a diplomatic event, with some party aspects. Aim to be elegant, but understated.

Dress Up With Justin

For those who can't get enough of his stylish image, New York Magazine's The Cut have made an interactive paper doll of the Prime Minister where you can dress him in several specific situational items. The list includes Ugg slippers for the Rideau cottage, Everlast boxing shorts, Michael Kors briefcase, and of course, a Canada Goose bomber jacket.

Have fun, we'll leave you to it.
